Higgins, Benjamin L.

Listed as a daguerreian artist in Syracuse and New York City, N.Y. One source noted him in Syracuse as early as 1846; he appeared in the city directories from 1851 to 1856. In 1851-1852 he was listed at 6 Franklin Building, in rooms formerly occupied by J.M. Clark & Brother. He was not listed in 1853-1854 (Clark took the rooms). This is probably the same "Benjamin L. Higgins" listed as a daguerreian in New York City in 1853. In 1855-1856 he was listed back at the old address in Syracuse. In 1857 he was listed as chief engineer for the Fire Department and towmaster on the Erie Canal. In November, 1851 he suffered an $1800 loss by fire. In 1851 he was elected secretary of the New York State Daguerreian Association. One source also noted Higgins listed in Boston, Mass., in 1850-1851, in business as the Clark Brothers and B.L. Higgins, on Tremont Row. Stamped on a brass mat, "Higgins". One source has recorded him as being black, but this is unsupported. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig

While his principal claim was the invention of the "Hillotype," a daguerreotype in natural colors, he was noted as an itinerant daguerreian from 1845 to 1847. In 1850-1851 he was listed as a daguerreian in Westkill, N.Y. Until October, 1851 he was also listed as a co-editor of Humphrey's Daguerreian Journal. In 1853-1854 he was listed as a daguerreian in New York City, in business as Levi L. Hill & Co. at 373 Broadway. The partnership was reported dissolved in the 1853-1854 partnership directory, and Hill apparently closed his city rooms in October, 1853. He reportedly did not personally operate these rooms. Employed by Scovill Manufacturing Co. from 1820. He started more new enterprises in the working of brass than any other individual. He formed the firm of Holmes and Hotchkiss c. 1826. With seven others, he raised $8,000 to begin the manufacture of sheet metal and wire with this firm. The firm was dissolved in 1856. Holmes sold his interest in 1834, and associated with Israel Coe, Anson G. Phelps and John Hungerford to establish a business in Wolcottville, Conn. He was president of Waterbury Brass in 1845. In 1853, he left and formed the firm of Holmes, Booth and Haydens, principally to cut into Scovill's profits from the daguerreotype business. Holmes was in charge of the mill; H.W. Hayden was in charge of the manufacturing; and H.H. Hayden was in charge of marketing. Holmes left the firm in 1869 to form Holmes, Booth and Atwood. He died in 1874. Holmes, William B.

Listed as a daguerreian in New York City, N.Y., 1853-1860. In 1853-1854 he was listed at 360 Eighth Avenue; he lived at the same address. In 1854-1855 he was listed at both 357 and 360 Eighth Avenue, apparently at the corner of West 29th Street. In 1855-1856 he was listed without a business address, and was back at 357 Eighth Avenue in 1856-1857. In 1857-1858 he was listed without a business address. In 1858-1859 he was not listed; and in 1859-1860 he was listed at 387 Bowery. Another source has confused him with Silas A. Holmes and the partnership with C.C. Harrison. He is probably the same as "W.W. Holmes", listed in 1854-1855 at the corner of 29th Street and Avenue 8, and at 357 Eighth Avenue from 1855 to 1857. Holmes, as they occupied the same address. This is probably the same John Holmwood (or perhaps F. Holmwood) listed in 1859 as a daguerreian in Yonkers, N.Y. In 1860-1861 he was listed on Broadway, Yonkers, as taking ambrotypes. He lived at the same address. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig

Holt, George W.A.

Also noted as G.M.A. Holt, daguerreian, New York City, N.Y., variously from 1841 to 1856. This is possibly the Holt noted c. 1841 as being in partnership as Lewis and Holt, although the source could have the incorrect date. In city directories, he was listed from 1851 to 1856. In 1851-1852 he was listed at 107 Bowery, with his residence the same. In 1852-1853 he was listed at 156 Bowery, in partnership as Osborn (J.M.) and Holt. He may be the same Holt noted working for M.M. Lawrence in 1854. In 1855-1856 he was listed without a business address. There is also a Lewis and Holt partnership noted in 1855. In 1860, Lewis (R.A.) advertised Lewis and Holt's collodion for sale. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig
