Uhlman, Rudolph

Active as a photographer in St. Joseph, Mo., 1860 or 1861 and later. Born in Saxony, Uhlman came to the U.S. at an early age and worked as a designer of silks. He was in the gold rush to Pike's Peak in 1859. Prior to leaving for the gold rush, he had loaned money to a photographer in St. Joseph. Upon his return, the man was unable to repay the loan, and Uhlman took possession of the gallery, at the corner of Felix and Edmond Streets. He worked until his death on March 23, 1898, in Hot Springs, Ark. At the time of his death, it was noted he had been a photogapher in St. Joseph for the past forty years. Unthank, William S.

A native of Richmond, Ind., he was a portrait painter in the 1840's in Indianapolis, returning to Richmond in 1857. He was listed as a daguerreotypist in Richmond that year at the southeast corner of Pearl and Main Streets. Local newspaper reports in January and February, 1857 complimented his ambrotype work. He moved to Cincinnati, where he experimented with a perpetual motion machine. Returning to Indianapolis about 1860, he was listed there as a daguerreian beginning in February, 1859, at 33 West Washington Street, over Pope's Drug Store. With a deterioration in his family life, he became a vagabond painter, wandering west. In 1891 he was in Council Bluffs, Iowa, destitute and almost blind. He died there in 1892.
