He was first reported as a daguerreian from 1846 to 1848 at 215 Broadway, New York City, N.Y.; his residence was listed at 51 Broome Street. In 1846-1847, an alternate directory listed him as a daguerreian at 281 Broadway.
In 1848-1849 he was listed as a daguerreian at 262 Broadway, in partnership with L.C. Cheney. From 1849 to 1853 he was listed as a daguerreian at 315 Broadway, with various residence addresses.
In 1851, Thompson's gallery became Root & Co. with Samuel Root, after Marcus Root sold his share of gallery. One source listed him from 1851 to 1853 at Thompson and Davis (J.D.) at 164 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, but these dates are incorrect.
Circa March, 1853, Thompson purchased Clark's Gallery, 551 Broadway, New York City. Clark was noted to be opening a new gallery in Syracuse, N.Y. From 1853 to 1855, Thompson was listed as a daguerreian at the 551 Broadway address, with various residence addresses. In 1854-1855 he was also listed as a daguerreian at 315 Broadway. He was listed in partnership as Thompson and Davis. The partnership not listed in subsequent years.
From 1854 to 1860 he was listed as a daguerreian at 164 Fulton Street, Brooklyn; his residence was listed in New York City. In 1855-1856, he was listed as a dealer in daguerreian stock at 315 Broadway and lived at 95 E. 33rd St. He was listed in business as J.W. Thompson & Co., with Henry Rockwell. From 1856 to 1858 he was listed at the same address, without any notice of company or partnership. In 1856-1857 he was listed as the sole agent for Eagle Plate Co.
In 1856, he was listed as a daguerreian at 180 Fulton Street, Brooklyn. In 1859 he was listed at 182 Fulton St., Brooklyn.
