McClees, James E.

(1821-1887) Born in Chester City, Pa., his family moved to Philadelphia in 1829, and he was reported to have begun his photographic career in 1844, working for M.P. Simons.

In 1847, McClees was listed as a daguerreian at 80-1/2 Walnut St., Philadelphia, in partnership as McClees and Germon, with Washington L. Germon. From 1848 to 1855 he was listed as a daguerreian, in the same partnership with Germon, at the southeast corner of Eighth and Chestnut Streets. This was probably the same address as 182 Chestnut St. In 1854 and 1855 the firm was listed at 160 Chestnut Street. In 1854, McClees traveled to Boston to learn photographic processes from John W. Black. One source also reported that in 1854 McClees and Germon moved their studio to 626 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, a location where they had been previously burned out.

In 1855, McClees went to Europe, and returned with Leonard Fauderbeck, who painted the first life-size photographs in the U.S.

In 1857, McClees was listed alone as a daguerreian at 160 Chestnut St., Philadelphia. In the winter (October) of 1857, McClees also opened a gallery in Washington, D.C., at 308 Pennsylvania Avenue. The principal operator for McClees in this gallery was Julian Vannerson; he also employed Samuel Cohner (Croner). The gallery operated until at least 1860. In announcing the opening of the gallery, McClees advertised it would be conducted by Vannerson, assisted by a Parisian artist with previous experience in New York City, and several chemical experts. The 308 Pennsylvania Avenue address was between 9th and 10th Streets, over Davis' Piano Store.

From 1858 to 1860, in Philadelphia, McClees was listed as a daguerreian at 626 Chestnut St. In 1860, he was listed in business as McClees & Co., the "Philadelphia Photographic Emporium." In this same year, he moved his gallery to 910 Chestnut St.

In 1860 in Washington, McClees listed himself in partnership as McClees and Beck (T.J.D.) at 308 Pennsylvania Avenue, and listed his home as being in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1867, he sold his gallery to William Bell. McClees died in 1887 in Philadelphia.

Notes: McClees is credited with making the first collodion negative in this country. Imprinted cases have been seen marked "McClees" and "McClees and Germon." A late daguerreotype by McClees exists which is dated January 7, 1858. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig

At an unspecified date, he presented a whole plate image of the city of Buffalo to the New York State Daguerreian Association.

In 1852, the company was listed as importers, manufacturers and dealers in daguerreian materials, and offered instruction in the art. In the same year, McDonnell called himself the oldest daguerreian in Buffalo, despite the fact that Benton was listed earlier.

In 1853-1854, he was listed as a daguerreian and stock depot, over 208 and 210 Main Street, with lived at the corner of Chippewa and Franklin Streets. In 1855 he was listed as a daguerreian and stock depot, over 194 Main Street, and lived on Pearl Street. From 1856 to 1858 he retained the same business address, and lived at 14 Oak Street.

In another 1859 directory, the removal of McDonnell from 194 to 232 Main Street was noted. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig

McIntyre, Sterling C.

Also sometimes noted as Samuel, he was a dentist and daguerreian. He may have been in Paris at the time of Daguerre's announcement, in 1839, and developed his interest in the process at that time.

While practicing dentistry in Tallahassee, Fla., in November, 1844, he advertised daguerreotypes. In May, 1845 he advertised he was taking a trip to Marianna, Fla., with plans to go on to Pensacola, Fla.

It was probably S.C. McIntyre who advertised in Tallahassee in December 20, 1845, as "G.A. McIntyre." Then he occupied rooms at Demilly's.

In May, 1846 he occupied rooms in Charleston, S.C., at 190 King Street, in partnership with J.J. Crygier. He maintained the gallery in Charleston until 1849, although one source reported him back in Tallahassee by December, 1848. Another source places him at 309 King Street, Charleston, in 1849.

In November, 1849, McIntyre announced he was opening a gallery in New York City, N.Y., and that W.S. McVaught would continue the Charleston gallery. In 1850-1851 he was listed in New York City, at 663 Broadway. It was also in 1850 that McIntyre left for California.

In January, 1851 he executed a five-panel panoramic daguerreotype of San Francisco, which he sent for exhibition at the Crystal Palace. He also sent back East various gold mining views. In April, 1851 he moved to Nevada City, Calif., where he advertised daguerreotypes. After that time, he advertised dental services but not daguereotypes, although one of his offices was in another daguerreian gallery. He left California in 1855 to return East, but nothing is known of him after his return. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig
