Kole, Hank

Active as a daguerreian, possibly with J.P. Ball's daguerreian gallery, Cincinnati, Ohio, c. 1853 or 1855. Information comes from a daguerreotype with a pencil inscription inside the case, "Taken by Hank Kole/ at Ball's Gallery/---/ May 10, 55" [or perhaps 53]. Owner indicated the blank space might be "Le Ray" or "Le K", which might indicate a gallery in Lexington, Ken. Such a gallery owned by Ball has never been recorded. Since all those associated with Ball were black, we make the assumption that if Kole worked for Ball then he, too, was black. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig
