Craig's Daguerreian Registry

There is seemingly no end to the amount of biographical information that continues to surface on pre-1860 American photographers. This I know because there is seemingly no end to to the letters, publications, notes, FAXes, and e-mails that I receive to augment Craig's Daguerreian Registry.

While the books and the WebSite carry my name, and while I am the researcher who read more than 1600 city directories, along with hundreds of books and periodicals, and compiled the basic information, the ongoing growth and expansion of the publication would not be possible without the generous contribution of researchers, historians and collectors around the world.

All of these people have been credited in the printed versions of Craig's Daguerreian Registry, but they also deserve "virtual" credit here as well.

Among the continual contributors, who always seem to be sending me new names or little pieces of information, are people like Ken Appollo, Helder Costa, and Larry Gottheim. Those who have made major contributions in specific geographic areas include Harvey S. Teal (South Carolina); John Waldsmith and, more recently, Diane Gagel (Ohio); Bruce Erickson (Hawaii); Craig Schneider (Reading, Pa.); Thomas Weprich (Pittsburgh, Pa.); Anne W. Stewart (material on John Mather); the Hon. Martin Magid (material on Jex Bardwell); Clifford and Michelle Krainik (John Plumbe, Jr. and Washington, D.C.); Peter Palmquist (California, et. al.); Steven Messengill (North Carolina); David Tinder (Michigan); David Haynes (Texas); Edwin L. Hill (Wisconsin); Alan R. Woolworth (Minnesota); Joan E. Hostetler (Indiana); and, most recently, Carl Peterson (Hamilton and other central New York state cities).

As we continue to update the Registry, both in print and on-line, some contributors stand out more than others, simply for the depth and bulk of their research. Most recently we received volumes of information from Joan Hostetler at the Indiana Photographers Project. She is involved in documenting photographers who worked in that state from 1840 to 1920, and provided us with hundreds of new entries. James A. Marusek of Bloomfield, Ind., has been sending us detailed biographical studies of photographers in Greene County, Indiana, and we are indebted to him as well.

Other recent condtributors include John C. Delph, Carl Fila, Kenneth J. Launie, David Seiler, William Gillespie, Stephen White, and Lloyd C. Wright.

Each day seems to bring new information which can be used to update or expand Craig's Daguerreian Registry. It is through this extensive cooperation and support that the Registry will continue to be the most comprehensive and accurate reference guide to these important American photographers.
