#31964: MOTHER OF PEARL CASE WITH CASTLE An empty sixth-plate daguerreotype case. This is a rare papier mache case with a hand-painted scene of what appears to be a three-towered castle, and inlaid chips of mother of pearl. The development of this style of case appears to be a uniquely American art form, and this particular example is not illustrated in Berg. Overall the case is in very nice condition, although it shows a random pattern of cracks in the surface varnish, common with normal aging of varnished paintings. The top edge of the case which holds the image inside is missing. The word "Token" appears imbossed in the decorative spine of the case. $295.00
